Well, we did it! Last Saturday my daughter picked up seven little chicks for us. We quickly built them a shelter and stood around for hours watching them. The exciting part is not knowing whether they are hens or roosters -- we'll see, huh? Since we have a 5-acre ranch these little things will eventually be free-rangers.

As a 60 year old, I'm doing my best to return to my childhood era. I want to live the rest of my life the way I did my first 20 years (excluding the outhouse, of course).

Thirty-five years ago (during a work hiatus) we fed ourselves from our garden and trading commodities with neighbors. It wasn't all that bad, as I remember. This time, however, we won't be driving around in our VW bus with the 2x4 bumper and the peace sign in the back window.

Hopefully, soon we'll be solar powered and care-free if I can arrange the deal financially.

Thanks for all of the inspiration. You are the coolest 30 something if ever known.

I understand the purpose of the minimum-order-of-25 rules (they're trying to prevent shortsighted parents from buying their kids baby chicks as pets for Easter), but it really makes it difficult for people who want to raise chickens in their backyards.

When the boys are two and a half pounds apiece, let me know, and I'll post instructions on how to butcher a chicken. It's not nearly as revolting as it sounds.

Thanks for the advice. As of last night, we have 25 chicks of various colors in a couple of plastic tubs in the bathroom with heat lamps suspended over them. We will divide the flock with Oliver when they're a little older. Ashley was afraid their doxies would develop a taste for the "nuggets" so we are chick-sitting the entire crew. Illinois has a law that you can't buy fewer than 25 chicks, so we just got straight run and figure we'll invite the boys to a chicken and dumpling meal later and thin the herd that way.
